Audi just globally released information for the new 2022 Audi RS 3, and it’s getting an extra sporty makeover. A few of the features include a widened body, sports exhaust system, and new cockpit displays. It’s pulling 401 horsepower, an expressive exterior and all the racing vibes on the inside. All the current details are European specs, however the U.S. specifications hopefully are coming soon. It is expected to hit dealerships (fingers crossed) in early 2022.
“With the second generation of the Audi RS 3 Sedan, we now offer premium sports cars that are suitable for everyday use. They represent the entry point into our RS world and, thanks to the torque splitter, the ultimate in outstanding performance in the compact segment,” said Sebastian Grams, Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH.
The RS 3 in previous generations rocked an excellent 2.5 TFSI engine with all the awards and accolades. In the new-generation model, it gets the same engine but improved, providing more power. The car sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, with a top track speed of 250 km/h. There is an optional performance upgrade pushing the top speed to 280 km/h. To top even that, the RS Dynamic Package and ceramic brakes, the top track speed is 290 km/h. The engine in paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission giving the engine short shifting times and a sportier gear ratio spread. This RS 3 features an all-new exhaust system with a fully variable flap control system that supports intermediate positions, therefore broadening the sound. The driving modes give clients the ability to customize their drives. Options include comfort, auto, dynamic, RS Individual, and efficiency.
The Audi RS 3 gets, exclusive to this model, a standard RS sports suspension with newly developed shock absorbers and a valve system. The valves job is to make sure the shock absorbers have a sensitive response to rebound and compression. This feature allows the suspension to respond to driving style faster and more effectively. The RS sport suspension plus with adaptive damper control is an available option. To provide such response, it continually and individually adjusts each shock absorber to the road conditions, the driving situation, and drivers choice of mode selection.
The rear axle features a four-link design with separate spring/damper arrangement, subframe, and tubular stabilizer bar. The wheel barriers aide in absorbing the increased lateral forces from the torque splitter. The new Audi RS 3 is stiffer than both the A3 and S3. This model also has the modular vehicle dynamics controller (mVDC). It’s job is to capture data from everything related to the lateral dynamics making sure they interact at full potential. The mVDC harmonizes the torque splitter, adaptive dampers, and wheel-selective torque control for precise steering and handling. Put it all together and it increases the agility of the vehicle, perfect for any driving mode.
This next-generation RS 3 has a new dynamic and powerful design. In the front, the wide RS bumper, the Singleframe with honeycomb grille (in black matte or high gloss finish), and large intakes demand your attention. It come standard with flat, wedge-shape LED headlights and taillights including dynamic turn signal lights. Clients have an optional upgrade to Matrix LED headlights, with darkened bezels featuring daytime running lights. The RS 3 has an ‘Easter Egg’ checkered flag in the left headlight. Also new is an additional air outlet behind the front wheel arches. The redesigned rocker panels have black trim paired with the flared wheel arches gives this model a brand new look.
On the Sportback RS 3model, the real axle track is a bit wider, with 19-inch cast wheels in 10-Y spoke design. Clients can upgrade to a true racing aesthetic with a 5-Y with RS branding. For the first time, Audi added Pirelli P Zero “Trofeo R” performance semi-slick tires. Even the RS-specific rear bumper is redesigned with an integrated diffuser, plus two large oval tailpipes. Two exclusive colors are available for the new RS 3: Kyalami green and Kemora gray. For the first time, the Sedan roof can be ordered in the contrasting color Brilliant Black. The Alu-Optic Trim package option is available that accentuates the front bumper, diffuser insert and window trim. The same applies to the mirror caps and the tailgate spoiler, and on the Sportback the roof edge gets the treatment.
The interior gives off all the race car vibes with a standard 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit plus. It displays the rpms in the form of a bar graph and shows power and torque as percentages. It also includes displays for g-forces, lap times and acceleration from 0-100km/h, 0-200 km/h, quarter mile, and eighth of a mile. Clients can get an optional “RS Runway” design as the rpm display. With this upgrade, the values are displayed in the opposite direction, resembling an airplane runway with highest speed in the foreground and the lowest speed in the background. Another first time feature is the head-up display that projects information on the windshield in the driver’s line of sight in addition to the shift light indicator. This helps the driver keep their eyes on the road but still have access to all the necessary driving information.
Other interior features include a carbon-fiber instrument panel, plus RS sport seats with RS embossing and anthracite contrast stitching. An optional seat upholstery upgrade is fine Nappa leather with RS honeycomb stitching and glossy black, red, or green contrast stitching. RS Design packages in red and green are available to match. Even the floor mats have contrast stitching and RS embroidery, and the safety belts have colored edges. The Design package plus comes with seat corners in red or green and a colored accents on the air vents.
Another RS 3 standard feature is a three-spoke RS Sport multifunctional leather wrapped steering wheel with built-in, die-cast zinc shift paddles. With the Design package, the RS badge is included and a 12 o’clock stripe for steering wheel positioning during dynamic driving. Both have the new RS Mode button on the right-hand steering wheel spoke to select the Audi drive select modes: RS Performance, RS Individual or last mode used.
